Orson
Welles what a great person whom I admired the most. When I watched his
unforgettable film “Citizen Kane” I may not have realised its entire potential
back then.
Ever since, I have been learning from this ubiquitous film in search
of “rosebud”. Only such a brilliant, creative and imaginative person could have
produced these distinguished craft.
I also remember vividly and continue to
listen to the soothing song “I know what it is to be young”. Written by Jerry
Abbott in 1984 and recited by legendary Orson Welles is a timeless reflection
and hence repeatedly resonates in my ears.
It
captures the essence of youth and passage of time, painting a picture of
youthful exuberance and the inevitable march of time. It reminds us to cherish
the present and to learn from the past.
Sincerely what do you think? Do we know what it is to be young? Is past and present comparable? Everything that has been touched has evolved. Turnaround continues at an accelerated pace.
“When
we were young age had no meaning”. Absolutely “time ticked away so the story told.” Yet time
fluctuated like a crawling snail which seemed to have all the leisure. I
remember sending letters to my family in Türkiye, during my stay in Manchester
as a student. Once send waiting in curiosity was unavoidable. At times cycle
duration extended to 2 weeks. Questions lingered on my mind were, did they
receive the message and more importantly how have they reacted to what I have
written, the content. Eagerness to be aware of local news and headlines was my
fundamental desire.
As soon as my education was complete I was back at home. Whatever I have felt back in UK was now reversed. I was longing to pick up and receive happenings from Manchester.
I have started my engineering career assignment right after my return. I was to pursue, challenging telecoms research and development as my first endeavour. Responsibility was livelihood and mastering at my profession was pleasurable elevating my desire to learn. I was destined to contribute to adoption of technology that we consume so easily these days.
After summer came the winter and so went the years. I have witnessed how new developments were shaping the businesses and everyday life. It still is a non-stop turmoil impacting all the dimensions we cared for. Invention of mobile technology, the internet and recently artificial intelligences just to name the few discontinuities. I must admit my understanding of science was not adequate to comprehend the real encounter young generation was up against. The race is on, evolving from a driver of a classical automobile to a pilot handling a formula 1 car. It is no longer an improvement in systems, processes and concepts. Frogs are leaping to further and further outposts. Cutting edge architectures are dominating and shaping business environment with distinct methodologies.
Today young generation is living in a timeless, instantaneous world. Proximity has been eliminated. Nobody are distances apart from each other anymore. Waiting for an answer even for a few minutes is irritation, anoyance and even grievance. Unquestionably pressure of not being left behind is creating an ambiguity. Breathing in such an atmosphere may be demanding in gaining new soft skills.
What makes us human should never deteriorate under any circumstance. Caring, loving, quest for peace must be our priority and not to be allowed to degrade or crumble.
I may still convince myself with my extended resilience and tolerance. On the other hand I do not foresee myself capable of laying out any suggestion for overcoming the constraints and hardship that young generation are facing. Peer learning, teaching sharing knowledge can take precedence over other matters.
With that I wish to all my readers a great 2025. What awaits us is exceptional and noteworthy. “There’ll be days remember”
I don’t know what it is to be young simple because stunning and staggering transitions make it inconceivable.
“Couldn’t find all the answers – No one has ever yet”

Lyrics
When we are young age has no meaning
I never gave it a second thought
Until one day along came this old man
And this is what he said to me
Yes this is what he said to me
I know what it is to be young
But you, you don’t know what it is to be old
Some day you will be saying the same thing
Time ticks away so the story is told
I’ve asked so many questions
Of the wise man I met
Couldn’t find all the answers
No one has as yet
There’ll be days to remember
Full of laughter and tears
After summer, comes winter and so go the years
So my friend,
Let’s make music together
I’ll play the old while you sing me the new
In time when your young days are over
There’ll
be someone sharing their time with you
“Orson Welles (born May 6, 1915, Kenosha, Wisconsin, U.S.—died October 10, 1985, Los Angeles, California) was an American motion-picture actor, director, producer, and writer. His innovative narrative techniques and use of photography, dramatic lighting, and music to further the dramatic line and to create mood made his Citizen Kane (1941)—which he wrote, directed, produced, and acted in—one of the most-influential films in the history of the art.” Ref Britannica
